When I was just starting my own project in 2013, I had no idea how it will impact my life. All I knew was that I wanted to start something new.
I completed my project on August 15th this year. But I already started a new one, here on tookapic. You’re probably asking yourself, why on earth people do that? Why do they sacrifice those precious minutes to take and publish that one photo every day. Well, let me tell you why they do it, and why you should do it too.
You will take better photos
Let’s start with something obvious. Practice makes perfect. You can’t get worse at something by doing it every day, right? Even if you’ve been shooting in “auto mode” your whole life, you’ll eventually get bored with it and start to experiment. And those experiments will lead to pretty cool discoveries. Like for example, what the hell is aperture and how changing it’s value will impact your photos.
Once you get to a certain level of quality, people will ask you to take photos for them. Or to buy your photos to use on their website. Even though I’m not a professional photographer, I managed to pay for my new lens with money earned from selling photos.
You will learn a lot
Not only will you learn how to take better photos, but you’ll also learn a lot about yourself. Taking a look back at your pics from few months before will give you a bigger picture of who you are, what and who is important to you.
Most of my photos were taken in my home city, in my neighbourhood and in my house. Conclusions? I should definitely travel more. I should go out more. I should party more. I should meet friends more often. I wouldn’t have noticed all this without my photos.
You will make new friends
You will meet amazing people both in real life and here on tookapic. Photographers see the world a bit different. They notice a lot more details. They’re able to capture those unique moments, that everybody else misses. Even when they don’t have a camera with them. And once you become a photographer, you will eventually meet other photographers.
Even though tookapic is quite new, it already has a wonderful community of photographers with various levels of experience. We have a lot of newbies, just like you. We also have some big time pros. But they’re all great people worth meeting in person.
You will develop a good habit
Everyone can take up drinking, or smoking. Developing bad habits is easy and it takes much less time. But you don’t want bad habits, do you? Instead, take up photography. I can assure you that after a month of taking daily pics it will be hard to stop. And, to be honest, there are only good things that can come out of it.
You will achieve the unachievable
There are very few experiences more depressing than talking to someone who has no passion, or at least a hobby. On the other hand it’s so inspiring to talk to someone who actually did something interesting with his life.
I remember talking to some people about my project. They all looked at me like I was trying to do something impossible. “A photo every day? For a year?!” Yes. It’s not that hard actually. Even though most people think it is. And the feeling of accomplishment that you get when you publish that #365 photo is hard to describe.
