100 days on tookapic - Robert de Bock

Straight from Netherlands – Robert de Bock. Like most of our users, Robert started his project on January 1st and keeps going without a single day missed.

What can you expect looking at his gallery? Cityscape photos. Street photography. And his wife and kids portraits. We asked Robert about his project and his gear. Here’s what he said.

Why did you start your 365 project?

2014 was quite a busy year for me, where I spent a bit too much time on work. I’m working daily with Linux in large environments, designing or building projects using Linux. 2015 needs to be a little more creative.

What camera you use and why?

Mostly a Fujifilm x100s, because it’s so small, silent and capable. Some years ago I had large DSLR’s and bought a second hand Fujifilm x100 to take with me a bit more easily. After a period I reviewed my images, and discovered over 80% was taken with to x100… (Which was way cheaper too!)

Since then I sold all DSLR gear, bought an Fujifilm X-Pro 1 with a few lenses. Upgraded the x100 to x100s. I noticed the x100s is nearly always the most logical tool to use.

What was the biggest challenge within those 100 days?

Not all days are visually appealing; especially the winter, dark, wet days, with just a (bike) route to work and back. On such a day it’s quite difficult to take an image that’s worth publishing.

How did you feel while uploading your 100th photo?

I’m quite used to publish images regularly, just not daily. So 100 images, that’s quite an accomplishment. I’m surprised my life is so organized by now; a couple of years ago this would have been impossible with all the holidays and extended weekends of going out and having fun.

What has changed in your photography within these 100 days?

A few (minor) settings have been changed. Using manual focus a little more often. But; I also noticed Manual, Aperture or Shutter settings are used less and less. I try to concentrate on the image more than technical stuff. And, yes there are moments where you need to change something, but for me that’s literally 1% or so.

What do you want to achieve by completing 365 project?

Get a full year of visuals and print it in some form, maybe a book or calendar, just for myself. 30/31 images on a page, a bit like a journal.

Which photo do you like most?

The image below shows a bridge system near our old house. The sun was rising, people were cycling. Really love this location, I think the image represents the beauty of this place.

Do you have any advice for our new users?

Go for it, start it any moment! Get yourself a small camera and start documenting your everyday life. Don’t over-think stuff too much, simply pick up some camera and have fun with it!
