100 days on tookapic - Ian Prince

The number of users with a streak number over 100 is growing every month. This week we’d like to introduce Ian Prince.

Like most of the users featured in “100 days“ series Ian has never missed a day and continues his journey towards the 365th pic. We asked him about his project. Here’s what he said.

Why did you decide to take part in 365 challenge?

I think I just told myself “Why not!”. I’ve always loved taking photos and was impressed by the quality of the photos I saw on tookapic, which I discovered quite by chance. The community seemed friendly (and has proved to be extremely so), so I just started, one photo at a time. I think by photo 10 I was totally addicted!

What camera you use and why?

An Olympus EM-5, because that’s what Paweł uses! More seriously though, my first camera was an OM-1 and I am more than happy I followed Paweł’s kind advice on the EM-5. I actually started on tookapic with a Nokia 1020 (amazing how good camera phones are these days….in good light) and still use that to snap family photos.

I also sometimes use a Sigma DP1 which I carry when I want something even smaller and lighter than the EM-5.

What was the biggest challenge within those 100 days?

The biggest challenge was uploading photos for a week from the mountains on a 2G network and begging for wifi access in cafés. The other challenge was to streamline my workflow. Two cameras, two computers and hundreds of photos certainly required some discipline.

There were also many days I’d leave the house saying “I’ve no idea what I’ll photograph today” thinking I’d not find anything worthwhile. The interesting thing is it was on those days that I took my better photos.

How did you feel while uploading your 100th photo?

Very pleased! It was especially nice as we were eleven to reach a hundred on the same day which made for a sense of shared accomplishment.

What has changed in your photography within these 100 days?

Not much. What has changed, however, is how I see. I now see light, shade, colours, shapes, contrast which I did not before. I’m finding it amazing how much beauty can be seen by just simply paying attention.

What do you want to achieve by completing 365 project?

I’m pretty sure I’ll be a better photographer, not just by taking photos but also by being inspired, and being supported by, those in the community.

At the same time it’s more for the journey that the destination, taking just a few minutes, each day, to see the world how it is.

Which photo do you like most?

Hard to choose one specific photo. The photos of my children are of course precious to me and I’m especially happy with the way Eva #2 turned out. I love the mountains and I think it shows in this one. I also like Braving the storm as it’s one of those photos that can only be made by being in the right place at the right time. But like Krzysztof wrote I hope that my best photos are still ahead of me.

Do you have any advice for our new users?

Easy: just start! Then it’s just one photo after the next, one day at a time. Just don’t be surprised when you get addicted!
